Bin: Recycling

These include jam jars, mason jars, and any other jars you can find that are made of glass.

Tip for Remembering the Bin: As a general rule, anything you find to be made only of glass or paper is recyclable.

DIY Reusing Methods:

Colored Sand Jar

Materials:

  1. Empty Glass Jar
  2. Sand
  3. Cups
  4. Food Coloring (or any other method of dyeing the sand like tempera paint powder)
  5. Stirrer
  6. Water
  7. Baking paper

Instructions:

  1. First, decide how many layers you want in your sand jar. Then, divide your sand into that many piles. If you want some layers to be bigger than others, make some piles of sand larger than others. If you want two layers of a certain color, you can keep them in the same pile. Just remember to divide them into two different sections once you're done!
  2. One by one, dye each pile of sand. To dye the sand, put the pile into a cup. Fill the cup with water till it just covers the sand. Then add a couple drops of food coloring (or your other method of dyeing the sand) and stir well.  Spread it out on the baking paper to dry.
  3. Repeat this with each pile of sand using a different cup for different colors.
  4. Layer the sand in the bottle by pouring it in and making sure not to shake it. For an interesting twist, you can tilt the bottle so the sand lows to one side and sits at an angle, instead of straight.
  5. Voila! Your own colored sand bottle!
